Welcome to Winidi Association, a dynamic force at the intersection of environmental advocacy, Indigenous rights, and sustainable development. Rooted in the rich tapestry of Indigenous wisdom and guided by the Kwakwala word "winidi," meaning "fights wars for his people," our association is dedicated to defending the lands, rights, and traditions of Indigenous communities, particularly in the context of contemporary challenges such as resource development and environmental exploitation.
At Winidi, our mission is to challenge the status quo and confront the exploitation of Indigenous lands and peoples for profit without regard for sustainability. We stand as guardians against the encroachment of external entities that prioritize financial gain over the well-being of our planet and its original stewards. Our commitment extends beyond mere consultation; we advocate for genuine dialogue, respect for traditional governance institutions, and the inclusion of Indigenous legal orders in decision-making processes.
See Greenwashing in ActionLessons from History: In the spirit of resilience, Winidi draws inspiration from historical struggles, exemplified by cases like the Trans Mountain pipeline and the Coastal GasLink conflict. We recognize the displacement of Indigenous law, the imposition of external governance structures, and the challenges faced in asserting Indigenous rights. These experiences fuel our dedication to challenging the existing legal hierarchy and fostering a more inclusive and equitable approach
Winidi believes in the power of dialogue. We actively engage with diverse perspectives, from traditional governance structures to contemporary legal frameworks, striving to bridge gaps and build understanding. Collaboration is at the heart of our efforts, as we work towards a future where Indigenous peoples actively participate in shaping solutions to environmental challenges, informed by their own legal traditions.
Sustainability is a cornerstone of our advocacy. We advocate for legislative controls that ensure transparency, prevent conflicts of interest, and mandate independent assessments by sustainability and environmental experts. By championing these measures, we aim to create a space where the interests of true sustainability prevail over short-term gains.
Winidi Association is more than an organization; it is a call for change. We challenge the assumptions that have marginalized Indigenous rights and undermined the role of Indigenous legal orders. Through our work, we strive to create a world where Indigenous wisdom is honored, and the stewardship of the land is a shared responsibility.
Please note that we are in no way affiliated with Kwakwaka’wakw artist and Mamalilikulla Chief Councillor John Powell (whose ancestral name is Winidi). We do take to heart his doctrine and agree fully with his statement: "Our ancestors … gave us the responsibility to steward this land — our seas and our skies and our connection to the supernatural — and to protect, defend, nourish and house all the creatures who come from all of those elements.”
